Install STP.Updater Client

The installation of the STP.Updater Client is a prerequisite for the Standard DESK, Outlook DESK, Office Integration, and the Client App Service. If the STP.Updater Client is not installed before reinstalling the programs and Office add-ins, the respective setup will perform the installation.

Note
The STP.Updater Client cannot be started on a terminal server.

Requirements for Installing the STP.Updater Client

You will need the username and password of a local administrator if you are not logged in as a local administrator on the computer.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 should already be installed or enabled on the terminal server or workstation. If necessary, it will be installed by the setup if the operating system allows it. A restart of the computer will then be necessary.

The drive with the program directory must be formatted with the NTFS file system.

Please have the following information ready:

  • The name of the server where the STP.Updater Server is to be installed
  • The TCP port number used by the Windows service STP.Updater Server on the STP.Updater Server. If you did not specify otherwise during setup, port 8017 will be used.
  • The directory to be used as the program directory. If you did not specify otherwise during setup, the directory %ProgramFiles%\STP AG\Administration\Updater Client will be used.
  • Whether the computer is a workstation or a terminal server.

The STP.Updater provides the necessary patches and updates for selected STP client programs from a central location.

The setup installs the necessary client components for the STP.Updater on the terminal server or a workstation. Start the executable file STP.UpdaterClient.Setup.exe. The setup installs the service STP.Updater ClientUpdateService.

For configuration, use the TCP port number suggested by the installation program whenever possible.

Default Configuration for the STP.Updater Client

  • Installation on a Terminal Server: Disabled
  • Target Folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\STP AG\Administration\STP.Updater Client\
  • Name of the STP.Updater Server: <empty>, enter the computer name here
  • Port: 8017

Note
Make sure your firewall does not block the ports used by the STP.Updater on the server and workstations. If you have not changed the suggested settings, these are port 8017 on the server and port 8007 on the workstations.

Note
As an installation prerequisite, the setup checks if the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 is present. If necessary, it will be installed by the setup if the operating system allows it. Installing the .NET Framework requires a restart of the computer.

Run STP.Updater Client Setup

To install the STP.Updater Server, follow these steps:

  1. Run the executable file STP.UpdaterClient.Setup.exe.

The STP.Updater Client InstallShield Wizard will start.

  2. Click the Next button. The "Terminal Server" window will open.

  3. Check the box Installation on a Terminal Server to disable the STP.Updater Client on a terminal server after installation.

If needed, uncheck the box Installation on a Terminal Server to install the STP.Updater Client on a workstation and enable the Windows service STP Updater ClientUpdateService.

    Then click the Next button.

The "Destination Folder" window will open.

Note: On a terminal server, scheduled application updates should not occur because the terminal server must be put into a special mode. However, since the STP.Updater Client is a prerequisite for other STP client applications, it must be present on the computer before installing the STP client application.

The Windows service STP Updater ClientUpdateService is disabled by checking the box Installation on a Terminal Server.

Warning: It is not checked whether the installation is actually on a terminal server.

Additionally, the start of the STP.Updater Client on a terminal server is prevented.

  4. Click the Change button to select a different destination folder. In the "Change Current Destination Folder" window, you can select the desired destination folder and create a new folder if needed.

Click the OK button to accept the selected folder as the destination folder.

Click the Cancel button to return to the "Destination Folder" window.

  5. In the "Destination Folder" window, click the Next button to accept the suggested destination folder.

The "Server Connection" window will open.

  6. Enter the name of the server where the STP.Updater Server is installed and the port used by the STP.Updater Server, then click the Next button.

The "Update Interval" window will open.

    Cycle for checking updates

    • "Daily": Checks for available updates once a day at 12:00 PM. Specify a different time to perform the check at another time.
    • "Hourly": Checks for available updates once per hour. This setting is pre-selected.
    • "Every 5 Minutes": Checks for available updates every 5 minutes.
    • "Manual": No scheduled check for available updates. Start the update via the context menu of the STP.Updater Client.
  7. Select one of the offered options and click the Next button.

The "Automatic Start" window will open.

    Startup Type

Automatically start Updater Client: The STP.Updater Client starts automatically when Windows starts.

Create a shortcut for manual start: A shortcut is created on the Windows desktop to manually start the STP.Updater Client.

  8. Select one of the offered options and click the Next button. The "Ready to Install the Program" window will open.

  9. Click the Cancel button to cancel the installation.

Click the Back button to change the client's configuration.

Click the Install button to install the STP.Updater Client.

  10. In the User Account Control, click the Yes button to continue the installation.

The installation will proceed with the configured parameters.

The "Install Shield Wizard Completed" window will be displayed.

  11. Click the Finish button to complete the installation.

The STP.Updater Client is installed, and the service STP.Updater ClientUpdateService has started. If the option to create a shortcut for manual start was selected during setup, the STP.Updater Client shortcut is on the desktop.

    Note
If a winsolvenz.p4 or client was already installed on the workstation before installing the STP.Updater Client, the Windows services STP Clientupdate Service and STP.Updater ClientUpdateService are installed and started after installation. This is intentional and not a problem. Both services can run simultaneously as long as they use different ports.

How to Perform an Unattended Installation

You can start an unattended installation of the STP.Updater Clients.

To do this, copy the files

  • SilentSetup.cmd
  • STP.UpdaterClient.Setup.exe

from the installation directory to a directory on the local computer or a shared directory.

Note
.NET Framework 4.8 should already be installed on all computers where the software will be installed.

  • Open the file SilentSetup.cmd with a text editor like Notepad.

  • Add or change the values for PORT, HOSTNAME, and if necessary, TARGETDIR.

  • If the file is in a shared directory on a remote computer, you must specify a UNC path in the form (\\<ServerName>\<ShareName>) before the lines with STP.UpdaterClient.Setup.exe.

  • UNC paths are not supported for the CD command. Comment out the line cd "%~dp0".

  • For the file STP.UpdaterClient.Setup.exe, an installation directory can optionally be specified using the INSTALLDIR parameter.

  • Comment out the undesired lines with REM or remove REM before the desired line.

  • Save the file SilentSetup.cmd.

  • From the workstation, run the executable file SilentSetup.cmd with the option "Run as Administrator". Enter the username and password of a local administrator if needed.

  • The installation will proceed with the configured parameters. The application will start automatically the next time Windows starts.

Terminal Server Installation

  1. Open the Command Prompt with the option "Run as Administrator".
  2. In the Command Prompt, type the command change user /install and press the [Enter] key.
  3. Run the executable file STP.UpdaterClientSetup.exe from the installation directory and follow the setup instructions.
  4. During the installation of the STP.Updater Client, check the box Installation on a Terminal Server.
  5. In the Command Prompt, type the command change user /execute and press the [Enter] key.

Note
The STP.Updater Client cannot be started on a terminal server. You will receive a corresponding message when you try to launch the application.

On a terminal server, applications should not be updated on a scheduled basis because the terminal server needs to be put into a special operating mode for this. However, since the STP.Updater Client is a prerequisite for installing other STP client applications, it must be present on the computer before installing the STP client application.

The Windows service STP.Updater ClientUpdateService is disabled by checking the Installation on a Terminal Server box.

Note
It is not checked whether the installation is actually being done on a terminal server.

Additionally, regardless of the selected setting of the Installation on a Terminal Server checkbox, the start of the STP.Updater Client on a terminal server is prevented.
