STP.Updater Server

Server Service

The Windows service STP.Updater Server is installed and configured through the setup. Patches and updates for the STP.Updater Client are provided via the STP.Updater Server setup and stored in the repository directory for the STP.Updater Client.

Repository

The STP product repository is a directory structure where updates and patches for selected STP products are provided.

If you did not specify a different directory or a UNC path to another server during setup, the files are located in the directory on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2:

C:\ProgramData\STP AG\Updater\Repository\

or on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 in the directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\

STP AG\Updater\Repository\

The ProgramData or Application Data folders are hidden directories and are not displayed in Windows Explorer with the default settings.

Enable the option to Show hidden files, folders, and drives or Show all files and folders in the folder options.

Patches and Updates

Patches and updates for the STP client programs are provided through the associated setup of the STP server application (e.g., STP.iDesk Server) and stored in the repository directory for the product.

If you specified a UNC path as the repository directory, share the directory for Everyone with read access. To place files in the repository, the Administrators group also needs change access (write access).

It is not recommended to manage access rights to the shared repository directory by user, as the access rights to the files in the folder only apply to the user who placed them there. If you add another user and grant them change access, they cannot delete or overwrite the files already placed in the repository. Only the user who placed the files there was assigned change access (write access) to the files.

Note
This can result in clients not being updated or receiving patches that do not match the current version.

However, if you use groups to manage access rights, this problem does not occur.

Repository Subdirectories

Updates for the STP.Updater Client are placed in the subdirectory Update\STP.Updater.Client by the server setup. The setups in this directory are copied to the workstations by the STP.Updater Client. This way, the STP.Updater Clients on the workstations are automatically updated.

Patches for the STP.Updater Client are manually placed in the subdirectory Patch\STP.Updater.Client. All patch files are copied by the STP.Updater Client from the product repository to the program directory of the STP.Updater Clients on the workstations without further checks.

Existing files are overwritten in the process.

Each STP server application that supports the STP.Updater Client creates an additional subdirectory in the Patch and Update subdirectories. The directory name is derived from the product name. Updates for the associated STP client program are placed in these subdirectories during the installation of a new STP server application or its update.

Note
The directory names in the product repository must not be changed. They are specified by the server setup of the application. If they are changed, the Windows service STP.Updater Server will not find updates for the client applications, and the programs on the workstations will no longer be updated.

Patches can be manually provided via copy and paste in the subdirectory Patch\<ProductName> for the respective product.

The folder structure in the program directory of the STP client application must be considered when placing the patches.

Examples

The setup for updating STP.Time can be found in the subdirectory Update\STP.Time in the product repository.

A patch for STP.Time is placed in the subdirectory

Patch\ STP.Time in the product repository.

The setup for updating the STP.Updater Client can be found in the subdirectory Update\STP.Updater.Client in the product repository.

Patches for the STP.Updater Client, which are meant to replace a file in the ClientUpdateUI folder in the program directory of the STP.Updater Client, are placed in the subdirectory

Update\STP.Updater.Client\ClientUpdateUI

in the product repository.

View STP.Updater Repository

The installation program added the icon View STP.Updater Repository to the public desktop of the server.

Click this icon to open the directory with the updater's repository in Windows Explorer.

Log File

The STP.Updater Server writes log files under Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in the directory

C:\Users\Public\Desktop\STP AG\STP.Updater.UpdateService.

or under Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 in the directory

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\

STP AG\STP.Updater.UpdateService

These files may be empty, as only errors are logged.

Except for the files LogConfig.xml and LogFile.txt, you can delete all log files if they are no longer needed for troubleshooting.
