Connecting STP.Documents OnPremise

Legal Twin® - Case Knowledge can work directly with the case files and documents you manage in your own infrastructure using STP.Documents OnPremise (formerly known as LEXolution.DMS). This article walks you through connecting your STP.Documents OnPremise system to Legal Twin® - Case Knowledge step by step.

Already using Advoware? Your documents are already connected through the Advoware onboarding process (as a connection of the type "STP.Documents.CloudStore for Advoware"). The steps described here are therefore not required. This article is intended solely for law firms running a local STP.Documents installation.

How the connection works

Legal Twin® is a cloud service. Access to your local documents is provided through the STP.Documents Universal API, which in turn communicates with your local system via the STP.Documents OnPremise Agent. Before Legal Twin® can establish a connection, two prerequisites must be met. The connection itself is set up through a one-time sign-in — Legal Twin® does not store any DMS credentials.

Prerequisites

1. OnPremise cloud connection

Your local user management must be connected to your STP cloud tenant. For more information, see Setting Up a Cloud Connection with the STP OnPremise Connector. All users with cloud access must belong to the CloudAccess group. To check whether a cloud user is also linked to the local system, go to "Profile" and double-click your email address. If "User XID (On-Premise)" is displayed there, your user is connected.

2. Licenses and groups

Your tenant requires the Universal Document APIs, Documents API Only, Documents OCR, and Semantic Search API licenses. Your users require the Documents.Users and Documents3.Users groups.

3. The OnPremise Agent is installed and connected

The STP.Documents OnPremise Agent connects your local DMS to the stp.one cloud. It must be installed and successfully connected to both systems — your DMS and your cloud tenant — before you proceed. To do this, follow the OnPremise Agent Installation guide.

4. STP.Documents OnPremise is set as the default persistence

Legal Twin® establishes the connection through the Universal API without specifying a particular storage backend. Therefore, STP.Documents OnPremise must be configured as the default persistence for your tenant. Your administrator can check the current setting and configure it using STP.Documents.Cli:

# Show available persistences and the current default persistence
.\STP.Documents.Cli.exe universal persistences

# Set STP.Documents OnPremise as the default
.\STP.Documents.Cli.exe universal set-default-persistence onpremise
  1. Sign in to Legal Twin® - Case Knowledge. If no system is connected yet, the "Add Data Connection" dialog will open automatically in the settings. Otherwise, you can access it at any time through the settings.

  2. Select the Documents option.

    Add Data Connection dialog

A note reminds you that this connection is intended exclusively for use with a local STP.Documents installation — which is exactly what we're setting up here.

  3. Click "Add". You will be redirected to sign in and prompted to grant Legal Twin® access to STP.Documents. Confirm the requested access.

  4. Once access has been granted, Legal Twin® verifies the connection. The first time your local system is accessed, an encrypted connection key is created on your behalf. This key needs to be activated once — see the next step.

Activating the connection key

The encrypted connection between the cloud and your local system is secured by a key. When the connection is established for the first time, this key is registered as a new device, which your administrator activates once in the Device Management section of the OnPremise Agent. Open the Agent's Device Management, locate the newly registered Universal device, and activate it.
